National Speed Limit To Rise
Speed limits are set as a way of keeping our roads safe and ensuring the death toll is kept low. There are some roads that have no speed limits for certain classes of vehicles, but in the UK the majority of roads have a limit of anything between ten miles per hour and the national, depending on whether the area is built up, rural, or near a school or housing estate. The current national speed limit on our fastest roads is seventy miles per hour, but the government are talking about raising the limit. Phillip Hammond, the transport secretary is talking about raising the national limit by a further ten miles per hour, to cut traffic jams, increase productivity and make journey times shorter for commuters.
Currently we enforce speed limits with cameras, police men and calming measures like speed bumps, lollipop ladies near schools and traffic lights. As technology improves the way the powers that be regulate our speeds adapt and improve.
But critics feel that this is a bad idea. They are saying that an extra ten miles per hour won't make a significant difference to our journey times, but will waste fuel (as the optimum speed for fuel consumption is a low fifty miles per hour) and it will burn more fuel when we are rapidly running out of fossil fuels. All these cons pale in comparison to the thought that if you have a car accident on a motorway at speeds of eight miles per hour, you are more likely to die that if you are at a speed of seventy miles per hour. Accidents in the UK on motorways often involve heavy goods vehicles, and the higher the speed, the less likely a victim will be to walk away with their lives in a road traffic accident.
The rise of deaths is predicted to be between five and ten percent should this change be made to our highway laws, something that road safety experts are increasingly concerned about.
